- "Before you go, it would be an honor for me to brief you on your next fight. May I?"
- ―Kliff
Kliff is Bunk Bed Junction's biggest fan who is always keen to help Mayday & Zuke come up with a plan to take on NSR's musical superstars. While presented as a helpful NPC, he turns out to be the final antagonist of No Straight Roads and, while not a true boss fight, the last obstacle standing in the way of saving Vinyl City.
Appearance[]
Kliff has red hair with a green headband and blue eyes and glasses. He also wears a purple scarf with pink stripes.
Personality[]
For most of the game, Kliff is an easygoing, helpful, and seemingly calm individual who shares Bunk Bed Junction's desire to overthrow EDM's harsh grip on Vinyl City and allow Rock to reign once more. He works as the information dealer, giving them tips on who each district leader is and what they should watch out for. He seems to also love Rock music, especially The Goolings.
However, once Tatiana is defeated, he is later revealed to be a very selfish, wrathful, vindictive, and spiteful man. Unlike Mayday & Zuke, who change their viewpoint when confronted with the reality that neither Rock nor EDM is a superior genre, he is determined to see Rock music reign supreme, no matter the cost, and wants to kill Tatiana by crashing the satellite into her tower as revenge for her changing to EDM and abandoning Rock and "her fans" entirely, even if it means it could endanger many ofer lives while doing so. He is also a hypocrite as when Kliff texts Bunk Bed Junction that Tatiana is "using" them in the final act of the game as a way to try and dissuade them from saving NSR, despite the fact that Kliff relied on the two to defeat NSR's artists throughout the entire game, and was not upfront about his revenge until the last minute.
It was also implied that he somehow got Mayday's phone number and knew where Bunk Bed Junction's sewer base was. Zuke is a little unnerved for both instances, showing how far he's willing to go in the name of rock. He doesn't truly care about the energy crisis at all, unlike Mayday and Zuke as only reason he supported them was because he just wanted to spite Tatiana for turning her back on rock. When she refuses to budge despite her defeat, he downs the NSR satellite to take her out permanently. In the final level, Kliff desperately tries to convince Mayday and Zuke to not to destroy the generators, at one point even attempting to convince them to stand in the enemies' attacks as a way to have them hurt, showing that he doesn't care about who gets harmed.
Relationships[]
Tatiana[]
Kliff was once a big fan of Tatiana when she was Kul Fyra, but was devastated after her band, the Goolings, broke up and switched to EDM. Since then, he developed a personal vendetta against her.
During the battle with Tatiana, Kliff asks if the support he gave her as her fan meant anything to her, with Tatiana replying that she doesn’t owe him anything. This made Kliff very upset. In rage, Kliff set the NSR Satellite to collide with the NSR Tower in order to end the company and have Rock become the new dominant genre in Vinyl City.
Bunk Bed Junction[]
Kliff from the start appears to have an interest in Mayday & Zuke's Band, labeling himself as Bunk Bed Junction's "#1 fan" and sharing Mayday's interest in Kul Fyra and the Goolings. Whether he genuinely enjoyed their music, or merely was using that as a front to hide his true intentions is not quite clear. Throughout the majority of the game, Kliff is very informative to the members of Bunk Bed Junction, aiding them in their quest to overthrow the various district leaders.
However, Once Mayday and Zuke discover the truth about EDM and Rock giving equal amounts of power and subsequently refuse to let NSR be destroyed via the satellite he dropped, he desperately attempts to talk them out of giving control back to the various bosses, before fully turning on them in a last-ditch effort attempt to roadblock the duo with an army of reprogrammed NSR robots.
Aftermath[]
Despite not getting involved in the final "fight", his actions start the climax of the game after Tatiana's boss fight. By hacking the NSR Satellite, and eventually causing it to steadily head course to Vinyl City, Bunk Bed Junction must return to each of the previous districts to reinstate the previous District Artists in order to prevent the satellite from crashing.
His whereabouts are unknown after Bunk Bed Junction and the NSR artists demolished the incoming satellite from crashing towards Vinyl City. It's possible that he was arrested by Tatiana for his crimes.
Trivia[]
General[]
- Kliff first appeared in the French dub promotion trailer of No Straight Roads, after the appearance of Kayane.
- During the #StarsofVinylCity promotional event made by the official video game's social media, he is introduced first before Kayane.
- Kliff is the first character to be introduced in this event.
- According to one of the AMA streams, Kliff is older than Tatiana.
Spoilers[]
- Kliff can be considered a reference to toxic fans who often feel as though the creators of their personal interests owe them just because they're fans. This is most evident in his interactions with Tatiana in which he cares more about her being wrong than Vinyl City's energy problem or when Kliff decides to hack the NSR satellite and crash it into Vinyl City after being told by Tatiana that she owes him nothing.
