Mayday is the guitarist of Bunk Bed Junction and one of the two protagonists of No Straight Roads.

Appearance

Mayday has orange skin, magenta eyes with flower-shaped pupils, and pale yellow hair with three small pigtails and braided side bangs. She wears a sleeveless red dress with a dark red underlayer, black knee-length shorts, a black fingerless glove located on her left hand, black shoes with the toes and heels cut out and purple trim, two armbands on her left arm, and a black choker on her neck.

Personality

Mayday is a joyful, tomboyish and outgoing guitarist. She's usually the one ready to jump head first into a fight against the NSR Artists.

She may have a guilty pleasure for idols, as evidenced by when she calls Sayu "cute" and repeats her when she says "One, two, three, peace", and when she becomes infatuated with 1010 after they flirt with her. Both times she's disappointed when they end up losing their good looks.

She is shown to have a good heart by the end of the game, where she realizes that destroying the NSR Tower would make Bunk Bed Junction no better than their oppressors. And during DK West's third rap battle, Mayday decides to join in the rap to help Zuke and his brother reconcile.

Gameplay

Mayday is a heavy-hitter type character. She has a 3-hit combo that deals heavier damage than Zuke, but her guitar is slower than his drumsticks. Her transformations are typically turrets, attacking their target to the beat of the music, aside from the fight against DJ Subatomic Supernova, where they fire off a single missile.

Mayday's Skill Tree grants her different abilities, including:

• A finisher strike after attacks, usable by holding down the attack button after the first, second, and third hit with each rank.
  • Another skill allows her to hold the finisher for longer to increase damage.
• Increasing max ammo to 7/8/9/12.
• Awarding extra ammo for melee hits/kills.
• Restoring her health with ranged hits.
• Increasing ranged hit damage when she has max ammo.
• Having a chance to not consume ammo with ranged attacks.
• Having transformations last longer.
• Granting energy after a successful transformation.
• Having transformations deal double damage.

Relationships

Zuke

Mayday's sewermate, bandmate and best friend. Their camaraderie can be seen as an implication of a relationship, though when the topic of actually having feelings for each other is brought up, they deny it. Even with their differences in personality, they're able to balance each other out, Zuke's calm and rational behavior being an anchor for Mayday's hot-headed impulsiveness. Even when Mayday first thinks of rebelling against NSR, Zuke tries to calm her down, before a blackout changes his mind.

NSR

She dislikes their misuse of power, but she never wanted to truly destroy them, seen when she refuses to let the satellite hit their tower.

Tatiana

Mayday was amazed to meet Tatiana in person at the Lights Up Audition and she was determined to impress her with her rock. However, after getting disqualified, and seeing how unfair she can be, she developed a newfound hatred of her, and is "now" determined to rise up against her and the artists of NSR. However, she is a huge fan of the former rock star "Kul Fyra", so when she sees her guitar and finds out Tatiana is Kul Fyra, she is shocked and heartbroken to see what her hero has become. But when the NSR satellite was hurtling towards the NSR tower, Mayday, deciding not to be like how they were, worked together with Tatiana to save the tower. She even used her old guitar to help Bunk Bed Junction get to the Qwasa. In the end, Tatiana decided to restart NSR as a system where all artists are welcome to perform with equality and fairness. She even invited Bunk Bed Junction to join, but Mayday declined saying she needed some time to process. To replace Mayday's broken guitar from their battle, Tatiana gives Mayday hers, knowing she would do well with it.

DJ Subatomic Supernova

She doesn't think very highly of him, mentioning how he is a slob for leaving his Mr. Dodo Ice Pop wrappers everywhere, and mocking him for repeating himself out of anger by calling him "DJ Broken Record". She is seen to be quite offended by being compared to Pluto by him (albeit not even knowing what Pluto is).

Sayu

Mayday has a complicated opinion about Sayu. She points out numerous times to Sayu that she's not real, being that Sayu is a digital creation. Despite this, Mayday does find her to be cute, even wanting to pinch her cheeks, but still wants to fight at the same time. She does get annoyed at Sayu for assuming she and Zuke are in a romantic relationship and for running away constantly. She becomes horrified once Sayu is transformed into a reverse mermaid, exclaiming "What happened to my cute mermaid idol?!" and wanting to "get this over with" as quickly as possible to spare her the comical trauma. Despite this, she doesn't appear to mind if Sayu returns; just on one condition: Never turn Sayu into "that thing" (the reverse mermaid) again. Sayu is the only character (besides Neon J. and Zuke) to show concern over Mayday crying.

Yinu

Mayday doesn't seem to be entertained by Yinu's piano playing, yelling "boring" as she and Zuke enter the concert hall, followed by Mayday groaning at Yinu’s playing of Canon in D as she prepares to battle. When Yinu paces up the music, she seems to be somewhat embarrassed at her prior insults to Yinu’s music. After Mayday destroys Yinu's piano, she doesn't seem to show remorse for her actions, until she looks saddened by Yinu playing a melancholy theme with her mother. She and Zuke later fix her piano during the reclamation of the Districts, with Yinu thanking them in return.

1010

Initially, Mayday has no substantial feelings regarding 1010 and is willing to fight as normal (although she does seem to react unusually when seeing their info sheet in the strategy room). However, after being showered with compliments by the band, she becomes rather infatuated and heart-struck to the point where she fantasizes about hanging out with them in the mansion, much to Zuke's dismay. Her perception changes once their faces melt off, to which she responds in horror. Despite all that has transpired, she still has feelings for them and is reluctant to finish them off with the Showstopper, even exclaiming that she's sorry for doing this to them. During their talk with Neon J. after the fight, she requests a signed 1010 poster from him, a request quickly declined by Zuke. The Bunk Bed Junction record versus 1010 shows them on a motorbike, with Mayday sobbing profusely as Zuke drives them away from an explosion behind them that has sent the 1010 members flying. (Note: Before a recent patch, the record cover was of a teary eyed Mayday driving a car running over the members of 1010.)

Eve

At first, Mayday's stance on Eve was hostile. Mayday did not see Eve in the chair although Zuke was able to. She was shocked by Eve appearing seemingly out of nowhere, with Eve exclaiming that Mayday shared “none of Zuke's artistic perception”. Mayday remains confused throughout the battle. She is only aware of how Zuke and Eve used to be partnered together and said, "Face it, Eve! Zuke's better than you." On the first album cover after Eve’s defeat, it shows Mayday and Zuke holding hands and grinning at each other victoriously, with Eve’s tearful eyes present as a shattered background. Despite Mayday's initial hostility, she understands Zuke's past with Eve and allows him to be alone with her. A thing to note is that Eve dislikes the magenta side of her skin, which is represented in how Mayday’s side of the battle is more aggressive than Zuke’s, and how often she attacks Mayday compared to Zuke.

Others

Kliff

Mayday was thrilled when Kliff said he was their biggest fan and wanted to help them beat NSR. Mayday strangely did not question why Kliff knew her contact number, even after Zuke brings it up. Kliff acted as a person of intel, telling Mayday and Zuke the next NSR boss they were to deal with and would constantly pop up on Mayday’s phone, either giving hints to beating the boss during the battle or providing commentary. After finding out Kliff only wanted to prove Tatiana wrong and destroy NSR, Mayday was stunned and would ignore the texts he sent as she and Zuke destroyed the machines that were preventing the artists from reclaiming their Districts.

DK West

Mayday tends not to interfere when Zuke and DK West argue. She showed concern for Zuke after seeing him lose his cool whenever DK West was around. During the final encounter, Mayday says that she would face DK West in a rap battle in place of Zuke, and was able to use her rap to reconcile West and Zuke.

Mother

Mayday's view of Mother is quite hostile, as she and Zuke often get insulted by her, being called "brats" and "imbeciles". She is immediately ready to fight Mother even after having just fallen from multiple feet in the air, screaming at her to "bring it". Mayday only seems to be passive when she plays the (broken) piano with her daughter.

Neon J.

She thinks of Neon J. as a control freak, calling him such in a dialogue box. When she cries, Neon seems to reach out to her in concern.

Story

Past

Not much is known about Mayday's past, other that admired Kul Fyra, and was heavily influenced to become a rockstar because of her. At some point, she met Zuke, and they formed Bunk Bed Junction.

Lights Up Auditions

Mayday, along with Zuke, once participated in the Lights Up Audition held by NSR to play their rock music. Despite successfully finishing the course, Tatiana and the EDM Artists dismissed them as EDM became the most popular in Vinyl City, overshadowing the rock genre. Once Tatiana prohibited rock for future auditions, Mayday started a plan to start a Music Revolution against the NSR empire, with Zuke’s support.

Vs. DJ Subatomic Supernova

Mayday and Zuke attempted to confront DJ Subatomic Supernova first to give rock another chance, but the attempt was in vain due to his ignorance.

Meeting Kliff

Sometime after hijacking DJ Subatomic Supernova's concert, she and Zuke are watching the news on Zuke's TV where Tatiana announces that despite the setbacks at Cash Tech, they will still continue with promoting EDM, promoting Mayday to punch the TV in frustration destroying it. After Zuke tells he that she owns him a TV, Mayday gets a text from a fan named Kliff who says he wants to help them out.

Vs. Sayu

The duo encounter Sayu in the Kura Kura Stream Hub. during the encounter, Mayday says that Sayu “isn’t real.” Making the mermaid idol merely disappointed before insisting that Mayday and Zuke were in a relationship (which they deny). After the battle is won, she unplugs the computer Sayu's creators were using and tells them to "don't ever turn Sayu into that thing again."

Vs. DK West

Mayday is not aware that DK West and Zuke were related, and simply takes casual notes of their initial battle. By the second battle, after Zuke denounces West and claims that he's no longer his brother, Mayday criticizes Zuke for being too edgy and overdramatic. She joins in the third battle, telling West that Zuke does truly care for him and that he shouldn't run away from the fight anymore, and asks him to show Zuke how to truly be an inspiration to people. By the end of the battle, Zuke and West make up.

Vs. Yinu

The duo barged into Natura Concert Hall, where Yinu's mother emerged from the curtains and attacked them for ruining her daughter's performance.

Vs. 1010

The duo manages to get onto 1010's limo while the group was on tour promoting them and their manager Neon J to fight (though May was reluctant to defeat them). After their defeat, Neon J goes into a long tirade about his life before he notices them leaving and asks what do they want out of this. Mayday initially asks for a 1010 poster until Zuke stops her while Neon J continues his tirade about his life.

Sometime after 1010's defeat, Mayday and Zuke are watching a cooking show on Zuke's poorly fixed TV until May punches the screen again, destroying it again. Zuke asks her why did she destroy the TV again where the only response May gives him is that she wanted to find another update about NSR and that the chief reminds her of Tatiana.

Vs. Tatiana and Finale

After defeating Eve, Mayday and Zuke finally reach the NSR Tower and confront Tatiana. Upon reaching her office, Mayday orders Tatiana to stand down but the CEO refuses to do so while Mayday criticizes her for being so biased about Rock. Tatiana responds that their hijacking of the districts would likely lead to more music riots around the city, even put people in harms way. When Tatiana asks how would Mayday run the city amongst the riots if she won, she's unable to provide an answer and Tatiana starts to attack the duo which catches Mayday off guard initially.

Trivia

• Mayday's birthdate is May 1st, because of her name, according to the crew behind Metronomik and its game, No Straight Roads.
• Talking to Yiruk again, before battling 1010 in a new game reveals that Mayday is 21 years old.
• Mayday's pants are from a suit that she and Zuke split, giving Zuke the top.
• Mayday’s glove is from a pair that she shares with Zuke. She wears the left glove, and Zuke wears the right glove. She also made her glove fingerless to better press the strings on her Guitar’s fretboard.
• According to a stream held by Daim/Haz, she was inspired from Genevieve from Company of Thieves, and the Unbreakable Kimmy Shmidt.
• It's revealed in-game She used to listen to Kul fyra's music on a radio with her Grandmother.
